The On the Road to Passchendaele Forum, has been created as a medium for study and discussions related to the Battle of Messines / Minenschlacht 1917 and the subsequent Third Ypres / Dritte Flandernschlacht 1917.
The aims of the Forum are to:
- Promote a better understanding of all aspects of the Battles of Messines and Third Ypres
- Publicise current and forthcoming events and recent developments
- Exchange information and knowledge
- Explore different points of view through respectful and open-minded discussions
- Create awareness of the regional and national diversity of the participants in the conflict
- Add nuances to some long-standing dogmas and credos
- Support “Remembrance”
The Forum was launched 31st July 2009, the 92nd anniversary of the start of Third Ypres.
As Passchendaele is the ultimate symbol for the suffering of all participants during Third Ypres, the name of this tiny Flemish village was the obvious choice for this Forum. The full title is derived from the beautiful song and pipetune “On the Road to Passchendaele”, composed by Major (Rtd.) Gavin Stoddart and folksinger Allan Brydon. |
